orchids

A drawing/watercolour of orchids at RHS Wisley. This was quite a fiddly one. Fun to draw, especially the twisting turning leaves, bulbs, and intricate flowers. The colour was more tricky, building up quite a few layers of yellows and blues to create rich greens, gentle ‘bleeding’ of pinks and red of flowers, and light watery ferns that creep and fill the background against the sunshine of the greenhouse.

Lysichiton americanus, better known but the less fancy name of yellow skunk cabbage. This is an oil painting on card done with W&N Artisan paints. These are lovely, chunky shapes to draw with dense textured cones.
